Mr. Salmi has M.Sc. degree in Rock Engineering and Mineral Processing from the Helsinki University of Technology (currently Aalto University) in Finland. Studies also included one year in Luleå University of Technology, Sweden.

Mr. Salmi has worked more than 25 years in the Finnish mining industry and operating mines and has acted there in 10 different work positions like Mine planning engineer, Mining engineer, Mine production engineer and Head of Mining in both Outokumpu’s Kemi chromite and Hitura nickel mines in Finland. During 2014-2021 he has worked also as the Vice President of Kemi Mine and Head of Kemi Mine’s deepening project. He has special expertise in mine planning, data processing, information management and information systems, mining automation, digitalization, strategy planning and managerial work.

Since 2021 Mr. Salmi has left industrial works and switched into the academic side to prepare his doctoral dissertation as Doctoral Researcher in University of Oulu in Finland. His research topics are digitalisation in mining, data management, information modelling, mine automation and system dynamic modelling. He is working there also as Research Director in the Civil engineering unit, Digital Construction and Mining research area.
