Filipe Calvão is an economic and environmental anthropologist (PhD, University of Chicago) and an Associate Professor at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (IHEID, Geneva). He investigates the nexus of digitalization and extractivism, including crypto-mining, and is the Principal Investigator in the European Research Council project ‘SynthLives’ on the futures of mining (www.miningfutures.eu). He is also and a trained gemmologist and diamond grader.
