Post-Conference Workshop
June 19, 2025 | Paradox Hotel, Vancouver (BC)
Applying Open Standards to Exploration, Production, and Emission Data in Mining
Mining companies face data challenges across their operations, including for exploration and production data, data from operations, and emissions data. This workshop will explore how data standards can help mining companies to best address issues such as these across all of these different types of data:
- Data accessibility and interoperability
- Preservation of data lineage
- Siloed data
- Ensuring data quality
- For emissions data, ensuring that the data captured is sufficient to enable reporting against global compliance regulations, and ensuring that emissions data can be shared easily within value chains
Several standards initiatives from The Open Group, including OSDU for Mining, the Open Footprint Forum, and our Open Process Automation Forum are working on standards that can help mining companies to better achieve their objectives through transforming their data and technology operations.
Workshop Objectives:
The objectives for this workshop include:
- Participants will gain an understanding of three standards initiatives addressing data management, emissions and carbon data for regulatory reporting, and a DCS standard for process control systems that are expected to positively impact the mining and metals industry
- Participants will be given the opportunity to share their views and requirements for the OSDU for mining initiative, and for the Open Footprint Data Model
What You Will Learn:
Participants will learn about:
- OSDU for mining, which can transform data operations for critical data inside of mining companies
- Open Footprint Data Model, which can ease regulatory reporting for emissions, and which can greatly ease emissions data sharing among value chains, and
- Open Process Automation Standard, which is bringing much needed interoperability and portability to DCS systems in mining and metals companies
Workshop Agenda:
9:00 - 9:30 Overview of OSDU for Mining Platform and Initiative
This session will describe how the OSDU for mining initiative came to be, core platform capabilities, extensions to the OSDU data definitions that are being worked for mining, how to adopt and use the OSDU for mining data platform, and how to get involved in the OSDU Forum.
9:30 - 10:00 Overview of Open Footprint Forum
This session will describe the Open Footprint Forum, which is creating a standard data model for emissions data, and for carbon data management in CCUS applications. Despite the prevalence of various GreenHouse Gas standards, including from the GHG Protocol, PBCSD PACT, ISO, and others, the lack of a standard data model for IT systems has inhibited simple data transfer, and has complicated reporting against the various global emissions regulations. The OFP Data Model, which is soon to be published as a standard by the Open Footprint Forum, will ease data management challenges associated with emissions and carbon data.
10:00 - 10:30 Overview of the Open Process Automation Standard
The process control systems market has been undergoing a transformation from closed, proprietary systems to open systems, with interoperability and portability. The mining and metals industry makes extensive use of distributed control systems. This session will explore the Open Process Automation Standard, which is enabling this transition.
10:30 - 11:00 Break
11:00 - 12:30 Requirements Workshops, OSDU for Mining, and Open Footprint Data Model
This interactive workshop session will explore requirements from mining companies for these two initiatives.
